How to Use Skype for Mediation

AdminJuly 5, 2023

Skype is a free internet service that allows you to call people anywhere in the world. It also has many features that can make it more useful for meetings. One of these features is its ability to hold video conference calls. This is useful for mediation as it allows you to see your clients and makes it more likely that they will be able to participate.

This article will explain how to use Skype for your mediation sessions. There are some steps that you must take in order to get the most out of this software, and some tips that will help you have better meetings with your clients. This will be particularly helpful if you are mediating divorce cases where the parties cannot meet in person.

Remote divorce mediation is a modern solution for couples that need to resolve issues like child custody and equitable distribution. Thanks to video conferencing technology, spouses can now talk with each other in real time, without having to be in the same room. In fact, it is possible for them to do their entire session via video conference, from the comfort of their own home. However, it is important to be able to have a good internet connection so that the conversation is not interrupted by any lags or dropouts.

The benefits of remote mediation are significant, especially for divorcing couples who cannot afford to travel to a traditional mediation office. However, it is important for mediators to understand that it is not as effective as a face-to-face meeting. Therefore, they should discuss this with their clients before they decide to try this type of mediation.

When you deploy Skype for Business Server, you can enable a feature called media bypass, which allows calls to be routed between a user endpoint and a PSTN gateway directly. This eliminates the need for a mediation server and reduces latency, unnecessary translation, and the possibility of packet loss. However, media bypass is not supported on links with constrained bandwidth, and it is not available for incoming calls to Skype for Business Server from PSTN gateways.

If you need to support PSTN gateways at branch sites, it is recommended that you deploy a Survivable Branch Appliance or a combination of a Front End Server, a Mediation Server, and a PSTN gateway at each site. If you are using SIP trunking, you should not enable media bypass because doing so can cause calls to fail over to the carrier network and experience poor quality. skype mediation
