Smelly Feet are one of the most common and frustrating of the non-social graces. Thousands of people struggle with this smelly problem, yet it is a relatively easy one to fix. Understanding what it is, is the first step.
Smelly feet can run in families, I am not sure if this is genetic or just the caring and sharing that happens so easily in families. I have noticed that if one family member has a propensity to smelly feet then often there are others in the same family with the problem as well.
The odor of your smelly shoes is very powerful and special, yes special to you. No-one else’s feet have exactly the same odor as yours. This fact makes it very difficult for you to remove your shoes when there is anyone else in the same room as you.
Smelly feet are caused by an active tribe of bacteria growing on your feet. The perfect environment for bacteria to cultivate is on your hot, sweaty feet and bacteria love to live in your shoes.
Since your feet are covered in a few million sweat glands, you can see why they get very wet and sweaty. Easily creating the perfect environment for growing millions of little bacteria, in the gallon or so of sweat your feet produce in a week. Just like BO under your arm pits, it is the bacteria that cause the smell, not the sweat, but your foot odor is much more powerful.
Not surprising then that if you are one of the many unlucky souls that has been blessed with this common problem, the smell can be bad enough to clear a room or even more embarrassing and perplexing be the reason why your romance can go out the window or door as soon as you take your feet out for an airing.
There are some great home remedies for smelly feet, often we find that grandma’s recipe is often the thing that works best and is usually the most economical fix it as well.
There are is a number of things you can do for stinky feet to relieve the problem, you most likely do this out of frustration anyway but it is important to first make sure that your feet are washed with a good soap, and then thoroughly dried, even in those fiddly places like between your toes.
Using a soap or skin wash that is pH neutral or slightly acidic is important, as this will return the environment of your skins pH to its normal slightly acidic balance. Using a soap with an alkaline pH will upset the balance and can make the smell worse.
Unfortunately most soaps on the market are alkaline, which makes no sense since our skin is the first barrier to disease, bacteria and fungus and needs to maintain its slightly acidic nature to ward off harmful invaders. Using an alkaline soap upsets this fine balance.
Make certain that you thoroughly dry your feet after a soak or shower. It is important to dry between and under your toes. We often miss drying under our toes thoroughly, leaving damp and warm perfect environment for more bacteria or fungal infections to establish themselves. Giving your feet a good salty bath is also great as it reduces the number of bacteria residing on your feet and helps to deodorize your feet as well.
After drying, dust your feet with foot powder, common baking soda is good or a quality foot powder from the pharmacy or drug store. Lavender oil and eucalyptus oil are also great, rub a few drops into your feet for a fresh aroma that will help with the deodorizing and removal of unwanted lingering smells.
Be aware of your shoes, put baking powder and eucalyptus in those and leave for 24 hours, making sure you dust them out thoroughly before you wear your shoes again. If your shoes are washable like gym or sports shoes give them a regular wash. Adding a little eucalyptus oil to the wash water helps to remove odors and any accumulated fats or oils that are present in your shoes as well. (Eucalyptus also helps to remove grease and oil from your clothes)
Do not wear the same shoes every day as this is just creating the same old yummy damp environment for the bacteria and makes a wonderful bacterial development factory. Allow your shoes to be thoroughly dried out before you wear them again.
Always wear absorbent socks, preferably cotton as these will soak up the perspiration better than any other sock on the market and always carry spares for those times when your feet are dripping or getting blisters.
